Going Out in Cyprus

There are many things to do and see in Cyprus both during the day and at night for people of all ages.

There are many historical places and museums to visit all over Cyprus so you can take in the islands natural beauty and Cyprus history.

Sailing, tennis, scuba diving, swimming, mountain biking and spas are just some of the activities on offer in Cyprus.

Cyprus has several stunning beaches; you can take a jeep safari into the dazzling Karpaz peninsula, a land of mountains, secret valleys and virgin forests where you can swim in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean from a deserted beach.

You can go to the cinema or the theatre and at night there are many pubs, bars and clubs to enjoy, with a lot of venues offering live entertainment. The night life in Cyprus is varied. There is something for everyone, from a relaxing evening drink to the vibrant club scene in Agia Napa.

Places to visit

Getting Around
One can travel around Cyprus either by bus, by taxi or private car. There are no trains in Cyprus. One of the most inexpensive ways of travelling is by bus, which costs approximately 1 euro. Buses are available every half an hour throughout the area. Almost all villages are connected with the nearest town by buses.

There are numerous places of interest in remote areas, if you like to explore then driving in Cyprus is a must. Fairly good surfaced roads complying with international traffic requirements link the towns and various villages. Use of a mobile phone is strictly prohibited. Visitors in Cyprus can drive using a valid international driving license or their national driving license provided it is valid for the vehicle class they intend to drive. Driving is on the left as in the UK. There are many places that you can hire a car from. Always use a reputable company.

Much of the Cyprus coastline is rocky; however, there are many sandy beaches.

Coral Bay, the most famous beach in Cyprus, is about 20 minutes drive away where a full range of water sports can be found. There's a restaurant/bar at Coral Bay, and showers to wash away the sand.

Lara Bay, a nature-reserve for turtles, is approximately a 45 minutes drive away.

If you don't want to drive yourself, communal service taxis are another option. They provide connections between all major towns every half hour. Regular taxis are reasonably priced and are especially good options for airport transfers.

Paphos Harbour has themed day and evening cruises with indoor shows and meals.

Paphos Karting Centre is one of the largest, fastest and most exciting circuits on the island. Come and race your friends, family and colleagues at speeds of up to 70mph!
We have a range of karts to suit both the novice driver or to test the more experienced, so it's guaranteed that there is something for everyone.

Paphos Karting Centre is home to 1600 metres of pure adrenaline combining twisting bends and long straights with flowing corners. Be sure to hold on tight around the two sweeping half handers as you approach the tunnel and make your way over the bridge!

Water Park
Aphrodite Water Park is a great day out for the whole family. The rides range from the very daring and extreme to those suitable for two-year-old children (and those of us who prefer a gently bob down the Lazy River).

Although you are not allowed to bring food or drink into the park, their prices are very reasonable. There are two restaurants and many kiosks that sell snacks, ice cream, fizzy drinks and beer.

Take a towel or two, get there early ahead of the coach parties, and grab your sun lounger. There's one umbrella per two sun loungers, but take lots of suntan cream even so.

For details see Aphrodite Water Park

 Wine Tasting
There are many vineyards offering free wine tasting. One is Kolios vineyards of Paphos, situated on a mountain peak on the outskirts of Stalios Ayios Photios village near Chryssoryatissa monastery. A wine museum can be found on the road between Paphos and Limassol.

 Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is available at Paphos Harbour through CyDive, a member of PADI. For a reasonable charge, lessons from beginner to advanced can be booked. Prices include hire of equipment and wetsuits. For more info, see: Cydive

There are also many areas of the coast suitable for scuba diving, although, obviously, this would be unsupervised and only suitably qualified divers

 Adonis Baths
Adonis Baths and Waterfalls is where Aphrodite met her lover, Adonis, and where they spent many happy years. And many of their children were born there.

The baths themselves are located below the falls with rocky cliffs on either side. Bathing in the water is said to make women look younger and more beautiful and men to become stronger. The swimming is incredible, diving off the rocks, challenging, and there are swings over the water. Can anyone resist such a temptation?

After a refreshing (and rejuvenating) swim, you can visit the old mill and fournos (large oven) that's located there. The oven was used in times-gone-by by women hoping to catch a glimpse of their lovers bathing. The old water mill was built over 400 years ago by monks and was used by surrounding villagers to grind their corn.

A 4x4 vehicle is recommended.

Eating out

Eating Out
Everyone knows that Cyprus is famous for its food; the cuisine is a blend of flavours gathered from all over the eastern Mediterranean. Cypriots cook with less oil than their Mediterranean neighbours. The cuisine is healthy apart from their love of syrup soaked pastries. All food is cooked fresh on a daily basis. The quality of fresh produce is excellent and the local salads are delicious.
One of the most popular dishes in Cyprus is a Meze. You are served up to 20 different saucer sized dishes, ranging from local cheese like halloumi and feta, meats like pork, chicken and fish.
Some of the most popular meals are:
Kleftico - lamb or goat roasted with vegetables in an outside oven
Sish Kebab - marinated lamb skewered and grilled over charcoal
Souvla - Lamb or goat cooked on a rotisserie
Souvlaki - Pork grilled on a skewer
Sheftalia - small rissoles of mince, onions and spices wrapped in a ‘skin' of gut rather like small sausages

Gone Fishing and lcoal village history

Fishing
Fishing trips can be taken from Paphos Harbour. Or you can hire a boat and just go. a wodnerful day out.

Konia village itself is a step back in history with its many examples of stone-built Cypriot houses and its church. At the local bar frequented by the elders of the village, you can see men sitting outside playing backgammon, or tavli as it is known in Greek. On Sunday evenings, you may hear the village elder calling the residents to church with the traditional song: a combination of Greek and Middle Eastern music. At Easter (the date of the Greek Orthodox Easter doesn't always coincide with other Christian churchs' Easters) Konia holds a street party with traditional dancing, food and drink and, after Mass on Easter Sunday, the village sets fire to a huge bonfire with an effigy of Judas Iscariot on top, followed by fireworks (very reminiscent of Guy Fawkes Night only the weather is nicer

Beaches

For the kids and beach lovers Paphos area has great beaches if you are looking for creatures in rock pools this can be fun. At Agios Giorgios, there is not only a picturesque harbour but also rock pools.

Other beaches can be found at Kato Paphos, approx 10 minutes by car and off the Paphos International Airport road -- you would have driven past it if you flew into Paphos.

Sea Caves is a little further on from Coral Bay (about 25 mins from Villa Estella). As the name suggests, there are underwater caves where, for those experienced enough, it is possible to swim or snorkel. These impressive caves can be seen from the coast road
